According to Greek legend, a farmer named Gordius rode into Phrygia’s public square on an oxcart. An oracle had previously decreed that the next king would arrive in the public square in such a manner, so the people made Gordius their king. In gratitude, Gordius tied his cart in the temple of the oracle's god, using a knot so intricate that no one could untie it, although many tried. A legend arose that whoever untied the "Gordian Knot" would rule Asia.
More than a century later, Alexander the Great was on the march to conquer the known world. When he encountered the challenge of the Gordian Knot, he unsheathed his sword and slashed through the knot with one swift stroke, solving the complex problem with a bold solution.
